Woodworm Treatment in Northern Ireland

The most common timber pest in Northern Ireland is the Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium punctatum). These beetles lay eggs in seasoned timber, which hatch within 3–4 weeks. The larvae bore deep into the wood, often for 3 to 5 years, before emerging through small circular holes between April and September.

Signs of Woodworm:

  • Tiny, round exit holes in timber
  • Fine powder (frass) around or beneath wood
  • Damaged or weakened timber structures

Our Treatment Process:

Inspection: We first determine whether the infestation is active. Old, inactive infestations with no damage typically do not require treatment.

Application: If active, we apply a third-generation microemulsion insecticide, designed for deep penetration and complete eradication.

Repair: If structural damage is found, we carry out localised timber repairs. In severe cases, we recommend consultation with a structural engineer.

Insecticide Benefits:

  • Excellent penetration into timber

  • Non-flammable, low odour, and water-based

  • Effective against all wood-boring insects

  • One-hour re-entry time

  • Biodegradable and non-hazardous surfactants

Dry Rot Treatment

Dry rot is caused by the fungus Serpula lacrymans, which thrives in damp, poorly ventilated conditions. It can spread rapidly through timber and even across masonry.

Common Signs of Dry Rot:

  • Cracking and shrinking of timber
  • Fungal growth or fruiting bodies
  • Damp or musty smell

Our Treatment Process:

  1. Identify and eliminate the source of moisture.
  2. Promote rapid drying through ventilation and heating.
  3. Remove infected timbers and replace with pre-treated wood.
  4. Apply a masonry fungicide to adjacent timbers and masonry.

Fungicide Advantages:

  • Broad-spectrum effectiveness
  • Low odour and non-corrosive
  • Truly water-based with no petroleum solvents
  • Contains I.P.B.C. for strong fungal control

Wet Rot Treatment

Wet rot, caused by the fungus Coniophora puteana, is a slower, localised form of timber decay. It typically appears in persistently damp environments but does not spread through masonry like dry rot.

Signs of Wet Rot:

  • Dark, softened, or crumbling wood
  • Affected areas feel damp
  • Linear cracking along the grain

Treatment:

  • Remove the source of moisture
  • Cut out and replace all decayed timber
  • Chemical treatment is not usually required unless moisture persists
